Lafayette City-Parish Councilman Kenneth Boudreaux has made a decision about running for city-parish president this fall.

Boudreaux has announced he’ll be seeking a third and final term on the council instead of entering the city-parish president’s race.

Council members are limited to three consecutive four-year terms. Boudreaux is serving his second term now.

For a few years, Boudreaux’s name has been bantered about as a possible candidate to replace term-limited City-Parish President Joey Durel.

Two men have announced their candidacy for that seat: Dee Stanley, chief administrative officer for Lafayette Consolidated Government, and Joel Robideaux, a state representative from Lafayette.

“I have taken this issue seriously and my thought process has been very balanced,” Boudreaux wrote in a news release Friday. “I have determined that my service will best benefit Lafayette Parish by seeking a third term on the council.”

Boudreaux, who represents council district 4, told The Daily Advertiser Monday he decided he has more work to do on the council. He was recently able to maintain a Tax Increment Financing district tax on Louisiana Avenue at Interstate 10 to assist a new commercial development that is expected to include a movie theater, grocery store and retail shops.

“When I ran in 2007, there was a shortage of family-friendly things to do in my district, like a movie theater, bowling alley and skating rink,” Boudreaux said. “This I-10 development opens the door for a movie theater and that encourages me to finish up some of those things.”

Additional economic development will continue to be a priority, especially in the Moss Street, Simcoe-Street, Louisiana Avenue and Pinhook Road corridors, he said.

Public and community safety also are a priority for Boudreaux, who said he will continue to work with the Lafayette Police Department to fight crime in District 4.

Boudreaux first took office in 2008. He was elected by fellow councilmen to serve as council chairman in 2011 and again in 2015. He also served as finance committee chairman five times and professional services committee chairman three times.
