Lafayette is known for its cultural richness and economic development. However, the Hub City’s gateway needs a bit of clearing out. Keep Lafayette Beautiful plans to create a neighborhood index of areas in need of cleaning.
Sharon Eaglin has lived on the same North Lafayette street for 20 years. Eaglin has had enough of scattered trash. “There are places I walk. I have been walking for at least six months and there were mattresses and trash still in that same place,” Eaglin tells KLFY.
She says another problem is when trash is placed curbside too far ahead of garbage collection time. Eaglin notes the streets and yards get cluttered. “If we don’t start with us nobody is going to help us okay. They can give us all kinds of money but if we don’t have the mindset to want more it’s just going to be wasted money” she says.
Caitilin Sonnier, a member of the Board of Directors for Keep Lafayette Beautiful, says the board is to meet on Wednesday. “Go over which streets we are going to go down and see what we’re going to do,” Sonnier says.
Sonnier adds that the index of heavily littered areas will include places within the unincorporated parts of Lafayette Parish. “Use that as a bases to help get our areas a little bit nicer,” notes Sonnier.
The Lafayette Consolidated Government sponsored program Project Front Yard to help Keep Lafayette Beautiful clean the identified neighborhoods.
