A Lafayette man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for distributing child pornography to a 16-year-old.

Thomas Dessoye, 54, pleated guilty to one count of distribution of child pornography. He was also sentenced to 10 years of supervised release and ordered to pay $5,095 in restitution, according to a press release from the United States Attorney’s Office in Lafayette.

According to evidence presented at the March 11 guilty plea, Dessoye began communicating with a 16-year-old, who lived in Minnesota, through the Internet. On Oct. 12, 2012, Dessoye sent the 16-year-old a link to his account on Dropbox, a file-sharing website. Dessoye had uploaded videos of child pornography to the Dropbox account, the press release says.

An affidavit filed in support of the criminal complaint says Dessoye traveled to Minnesota without the knowledge or consent of the 16-year-old’s parents, picked the minor up and returned to Louisiana. After the parents reported the child missing, officials with the Sherburn County Sheriff’s Office and the Lafayette Parish Office were able to locate the minor at Dessoye’s residence using information from a cellphone provider. The child was returned to the parents.

The FBI, Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office of Elk River, Minn., investigated the case.
