Changes may be coming to Lafayette’s curbside recycling program, including the possibility of offering recycling at apartments.
The Lafayette City-Parish Council on Aug. 25 is expected to consider a resolution that will put its curbside recycling contractor on notice that the contract will not be renewed. The contract expires on Feb. 29, 2016.
Public Works Director Kevin Blanchard said Lafayette Consolidated Government has not experienced problems with the recycling program. The contract is just old and it’s time for a new one.
The existing contract includes a provision that requires LCG to notify the company 180 days before the contract expires if it doesn’t plan to renew the contract. Without that notification, the contract automatically renews for 10 years.
Blanchard said he plans to seek open bids on curbside recycling as it exists, with options for the cost of alternatives like apartment complexes.
“The comp plan had a few recommendations on trying to expand recycling. We’re going to take a shot at it,” he said.
