A Lafayette Parish school bus driver, suspected of driving a school bus under the influence, has resigned.
John Bernard, a 14-year veteran of the school district, resigned on Monday morning after meeting with the superintendent and transportation director. Bernard was driving a school bus with 12 children on board when the bus slid off the road. Bernard submitted to two blood alcohol tests, one for the school board and one for the police department.
The school board says it has the results, but the test results are confidential. The results from the police department are not ready yet.
The accident happened last Thursday morning on La Flamme road near St. Nazaire Road. Bernard was on his way to Katharine Drexel Elementary in Broussard at the time of the accident.
