A Baton Rouge man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after authorities say he and his second wife tried to starve his then-20-month-old son to death in 2009 for money that was put aside for the child after his mother died.
The Advocate (http://bit.ly/1K8NDIr ) reports that 32-year-old Steven Staggs was sentenced Wednesday, after a jury convicted him of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile in July.
Authorities say Staggs’ son was severely malnourished when he was rushed to a hospital in August 2009.
In 2012, Charlotte Staggs was found guilty on the same charge and sentenced to 40 years in prison.
The boy’s biological mother, Amanda Staggs, died in a car accident in 2008. The child, now 7 years old, was adopted by his maternal grandmother and her husband.
