The CEO of Facebook said Tuesday the company is working on creating a ‘dislike’ button.

During a Townhall Q&A, Mark Zuckerberg was asked when other options besides the ‘like’ button would be added to the social media network.

“I think people have asked about the ‘dislike’ button for many years, and probably hundreds of people have asked about this,” Zuckerberg responded.

“Today is a special day because today is the day where I actually get to say we’re working on it,” he added.

Zuckerberg said the company is “very close” to rolling out a test version.

He said it took Facebook a while to get to this point because they didn’t want the site to turn into some kind of forum where people are voting up or down on each other’s posts.

“You don’t want to go through the process of sharing something that’s important to you and have other people down vote it,” Zuckerberg explained. “That isn’t what we’re here to build in the world.”

He said what he learned over the years, though, is that people aren’t looking for the ability to down vote other posts. They are looking for a way to express empathy.

“Not every moment is a good moment,” Zuckerberg said. “If you want to share something that’s sad, whether it’s in current events or if a family member passed away, then it may not feel comfortable to ‘like’ that post.”

But he said it’s important to give people more options than just ‘like’ as “a quick way to emote and share their feelings on a post.”

Zuckerberg said it’s surprisingly complicated to create an interactive button like the ‘dislike’ feature, but “we’re gonna be ready to test soon.”Click here to watch the full Townhall Q&A.
