Lafayette Police Department Public Information Officer Cpl. Paul Mouton announced on Thursday that police will be conducting an OWI checkpoint Friday within the incorporated limits of Lafayette.

The purpose of the checkpoint, Mouton said in a press release, is to target impaired drivers under the influence of alcohol or any other dangerous substances. Officers at the checkpoint will respond with zero tolerance towards any driver found to be under the influence.

Louisiana is one of the stricter states for DWI enforcement.

Cpl. Mouton warned those going out that night intending to drink to designate a driver, as not doing so could result in costly fines and serious jail time.
