ST. MARTINVILLE, La. (KLFY)— The first two weeks of DSNAP benefits in Louisiana have passed and around 110,000 households have already received the extra help.
The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services have announced new locations in Acadiana where residents can register DSNAP benefits: This includes St. Martin, Jeff Davis and Evangeline Parishes.
The DSNAP program was started to help provide households with help buying groceries following a disaster.
News 10 spoke with residents of St. Martin Parish where the flood damage was so extensive that anyone in the parish could qualify for the benefits.
“My foundation started sinking from the water just standing.” Said Welton Taylor, a flood victim, “You know it kind of made the walls start to buckle.”
Beginning Tuesday DSNAP benefits will be available in the area for flood victims in St. Martin Parish.
According to Sammy Guillory with the Department of Children and Family Services, flood victims should preregister for DSNAP, “They can do that by calling our customer service center or by doing it online with our website.”
According to Guillory, the benefits will be open to all, if you meet eligibility criteria, even if you do not receive regular SNAP benefits.
“We encourage anyone who feel like they were impacted and who do not receive regular SNAP, they can apply and see if they meet the eligibility criteria,” Guillory said.
Officials from the Department of Children and Family services said they stress that anyone applying for DSNAP benefits should go to the registration site on the date corresponding to the applicant’s last name in order to make the process a little smoother and minimize wait times.
