Philip DeSelle was released from Wade Correctional Center on Thursday, 25 years early, due to his participation in prison rehabilitation programs. He now resides in the Bayou Chicot area.

In 1990 Averie Evans (11) of Natchitoches disappeared while selling candy door-to-door for a school fundraiser. A few months later, DeSelle, a neighbor, admitted to killing her and was charged with her death and sentenced to 50 years in prison.

Evans’ family is furious including her aunt who wants to warn the community of his release.

In a statement posted on the Justice for Averie Facebook Page, the family addressed DeSelle’s release:Another day has dawned and our Averie is still gone, and now her killer walks free. The cold, gray rain outside matches our grief. Wade Correctional has confirmed that he was released and has left the prison. We wait now for confirmation of where he will be living. He has 48 hours to report to a probation and parole office – the end of the 48 hours falls on Saturday and that means it could be Monday before he reports. 4 days of no supervision. Please continue to share his information and his photo with urgency. Hold you children a little tighter. The world just got a little colder.

Deselle, now 65, is free to live in Allen, Evangeline or St. Landry parishes. Pam LaBorde, Communications Director for the Louisiana Department of Corrections, told News 10, if he chose to move out of district, he would have be cleared with the office to do so.

DeSelle is on probation until 2040.
