A proposal before the Calcasieu Parish School Board will allow for the hiring of people who were convicted of a felony not listed in the state Child Protection Act.

The law lists the offenses that automatically disqualify people from working with children. The list includes murder, rape, kidnapping, and other crimes of the violent or sexual nature. Offenses not listed would be discretionary to the employer.

According to local media reports, the proposal would open employment to someone with a felony that happened more than 10 years ago.

Currently, the district won’t employ anyone whose background check shows any kind of felony convictions. There is no time line for the convictions.

Board members this week sent the item to the personnel committee, which meets Tuesday, for study and a recommendation.
