ALBANY, N.Y. (WTEN) – New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is directing the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) to restrict sex offenders from using Pokemon Go and other similar games.

According to the governor’s office, under Gov. Cuomo’s direction, DOCCS has imposed a new condition of parole that would prohibit sex offenders from downloading, accessing, or engaging in any internet enabled gaming activities.

The new condition affects nearly 3,000 sex offenders currently on parole.

“Protecting New York’s children is priority number one and, as technology evolves, we must ensure these advances don’t become new avenues for dangerous predators to prey on new victims,” Governor Cuomo said. “These actions will provide safeguards for the players of these augmented reality games and help take one more tool away from those seeking to do harm to our children.”

Gov. Cuomo also sent a letter to Pokemon Go creator Niantic, Inc., requesting cooperation in barring sex offenders from playing the game.

The actions were made after the governor’s office says a recent report by Senators Jeffrey Klein and Diane Savino found that children playing the game were unknowingly going to locations close to or at sex offender residences.
